Island Discovery provides families with access to GSuite for Education (formerly Google Apps for Education). GSuite for Education allows us to communicate, share and collaborate with you in a timely, efficient manner. In some cases our teachers will be using GSuite for educational purposes with your student (our classroom programs). We are hoping that all parents will use this system.
Island Discovery is committed to promoting the safe and responsible use of web-based communication tools. We feel that the development of such skills in a supportive environment is the best way to prepare our students for the world they live in for today and tomorrow. We also believe strongly in the power of a positive digital footprint for all of our staff and students. A key part of this footprint is the use of Web-based publishing and storage of student work (storing "in the Cloud"). As a program supported by a B.C. school district we are subject to the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA). In accordance with this Act, we must at all times protect the privacy of students under our care. Under this Act, we cannot upload and/or post to the internet, personal and identifiable information of a student (e.g., first name, last name, school, grade, teacher, class), including student work, without the written consent of the student's parent or guardian.
GSuite for Education is very secure, and users are not subject to advertising while using the Core Services. This is unlike any other consumer google accounts. Any data or personal information shared through our Island Discovery Google account will not be owned by Google. You can read more about all of this here:
https://www.google.com/edu/trust.
GSuite for Education is used by school districts, private schools, colleges, and universities all across Canada and throughout the world.
Island Discovery provides access to and manages GSuite for Education accounts for staff, parents and some of our students in our classroom programs. These applications are different from public Google applications in that they are managed by the system administrators of our program, they do not scan user information for advertising, and they allow for more strict filtering and application control by Island Discovery system administrators.
The personal information required for creating GSuite for Education accounts, and any digital files created or uploaded into the platform, are located on Google servers that reside outside of Canada, and are therefore subject to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA). The Google Privacy Policy and GSuite for Education Terms of Service state that Google will not share any Island Discovery Learning Community GSuite for Education information with any 3rd party, except under legal obligation, as mentioned below.
